My
trip to Wadi Natrun, the desert home for several Coptic monasteries.
Looking outside the hotel foyer.
The desert around Wadi Natrun. Even with buses and cars, the area is still remote
and desolate.
Compound of St. Baramus.
An old water wheel.
Monks' cells are off-limits.
Their original refectory, now unused, which is directly attached to the sanctuary.
You can see the lectern in the back, from which someone would read scriptures
to keep the monks focused on the spirit as opposed ot the flesh when eating.
Outside St. Bishoi.
The drawbridge to the keep.
Mosaic (modern I think) just outside the entrance to the monk's area.
Entrance to the church.
Panels on either side of the altar.
This is a picture of a side altar that was behind a wooden screen. I took this
through a small window. The air was heavy with incense smoke.
The second of the three sections of this Coptic church, where the believers
gathered and where the pulpit resides.
Speaking of the pulpit...
Looking into the thhird section for thise who have taken communion.
Back outside.
An often-touched icon just near the entrance to the monastery.
